About the Species
The Gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is the largest of the oryx species and one of the most visually distinctive animals in the African plains game category. Their bold black-and-white facial markings, contrasting tan and white body, and long, straight horns make them immediately recognizable and highly sought after as trophy animals.
Native to the arid regions of Southern Africa, Gemsbok are exceptionally drought-tolerant and well-suited to the semi-arid conditions of West Texas, the Trans-Pecos, and South Texas brush country. They can survive on minimal water, obtaining moisture from the vegetation they consume.
Both bulls and cows carry horns, though bulls typically have thicker, more heavily ringed horns while cows tend to grow longer, more slender horns. This makes Gemsbok one of the few exotic species where cows are also considered trophy animals.
